Sisters of St. Joseph and Sisters of Visitation To Receive Kolvenbach Award

Wheeling Jesuit University President Rev. Joseph R. Hacala announced today that the University will confer the distinguished Kolvenbach Award during its 48th Commencement to the Sisters of the Visitation, the Sisters of St. Joseph, and all past and current lay colleagues of the University—faculty, staff and administrators.

The Award, named in honor of the Very Rev. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., current Superior General of the Society of Jesus, honors groups and individuals who promote and serve the Mission of Wheeling Jesuit University, educating men and women for life, leadership, and service.

“Neighbors and collaborators of the University since its founding in 1954, the Sisters of the Visitation came to Wheeling in 1848, and have distinguished themselves in education at Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy and by their presence and ministry in the area. The Sisters of St. Joseph have served in the Diocese and the state for 153 years. Their educational, charitable, and spiritual ministries have long and faithfully served the needs of the state and region,” says Fr. Hacala

Fr. Hacala announced that the University will honor all past and current lay colleagues— faculty, staff, and administrators —with the Kolvenbach Award, for their faithful and dedicated service.

The University, with a staff of 12 Jesuits and four lay professors, opened on September 26, 1955. The first class of 90 students was offered 25 courses in 12 majors. The University, throughout its history, has provided a Jesuit, Catholic, liberal arts education.
