WHEELING, WV, Oct. 21, 2008 - The Cardinal men's basketball team goes up against Marshall University's Thundering Herd in its only exhibition game of the 2008-09 season at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington.
Wheeling Jesuit is the
alma mater of Marshall's Director of Basketball Operations Tim Thomas.
The Cardinals open their regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 as they take on Clarion University at home. The season is expected to be a transitional year for the men's basketball program.
Coach Danny Sancomb returns for his second year as head coach after guiding the Cardinals to a 13-15 record last season. 2008 marks a fresh start as the program brings in nine new faces to join the seven returnees from last year.
“We're going to have a whole new team, but I'm excited. I think we have our key players coming back and we've added several talented young guys,” said Coach Sancomb.
Admission to the WJU vs. Marshall game is $9 and all seating is general admission.
Wheeling Jesuit has 18 men's and women's athletic teams, most of which compete in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) and NCAA Division II.
The athletic teams have won more than 55 WVIAC titles, fielding 40 plus Academic All-Americans, and receiving more than 30 WVIAC Coach of the Year awards. More than 25 percent of the University's full-time day undergraduate students participate on an athletic team and rack up a 3.1 GPA.
