WHEELING, WV, July 27, 2009 - Sophomore nursing students in the new accelerated baccalaureate of nursing program received official white lab coats as they were honored at a summer promotion ceremony in the Erickson Alumni Center, Monday, July 27.
The program allows students who already have a four-year degree but now want to become a nurse the chance to earn a fast-track BSN in as little as 18-months.
The inaugural class in this new program includes the following students who were honored Monday: William Bell, Amy Bott, Sarah Cole, Joshua Collins, Ken Dearth, Jami Ebbert, Molly Grimes, Sara Haines, Michael Hughes, Elizabeth Martin, Edie Martinez, Janette Sampson and Danielle Tate.
The first class of nurses in this program graduates in December 2010 and will enter the job market at a time when nursing applicants are especially low in HR departments everywhere.
Monday's lab coat ceremony was coordinated by Assistant Professor of Nursing Amanda Wakim, who is also the sophomore nursing level coordinator. Also in attendance were nursing instructor Darlene Sperlazza, who gave the opening prayer, followed by a brief talk by Dr. Rose Kutlenios, the chair of the Department of Nursing.
Dean of Professional Studies, Dr. John Mansuy, also addressed the nursing students. After the formal program, the class enjoyed a catered lunch together.
