WHEELING, WV, Aug. 26, 2009 - Wheeling Jesuit University was named a Military Friendly School for 2010 by
G.I. Jobs, a veteran-owned business headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa. This honor ranks Wheeling Jesuit in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide and recognizes its effort to embrace America’s veterans as students.
As a Military Friendly School, Wheeling Jesuit will be included with a basic listing in the Guide to Military Friendly Schools being published this September. More than eight million military members and veterans are seeking a college, and this award recognizes Wheeling Jesuit’s commitment to educating the nation’s most deserving heroes.
“We are dedicated to helping active-service military and veterans and their dependents to take advantage of our full range of academics,” said John Mansuy, Dean of Professional Studies and himself a veteran of the United States Air Force. “We are pleased that G.I. Jobs recognized our efforts and we invite veterans to give us a call and explore the options open to them at Wheeling Jesuit.”
Wheeling Jesuit is also participating in the new Yellow Ribbon Program and the Troops to Teachers initiative to expand veterans’ options.
Since 2001,
G.I. Jobs has published a monthly magazine and web site catering to military job seekers. Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
“This list is especially important now because the recently enacted Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack,
G.I. Jobs publisher. “Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided they’re academically qualified. So schools are clamoring for them like never before. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.”
The list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last May during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. A new Web site, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, will also launch in September with interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans in choosing schools that best meet their educational needs.
The youngest of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, Wheeling Jesuit University offers students a quality private education. Since 1995
U.S.News & World Report has ranked the university among the top institutions in its “Best Master’s Universities in the South” category and this year, Forbes ranked it 180 out of 600 in the 2009 Forbes Best Colleges survey.
