WHEELING, W.Va., March 11, 2014 –Wheeling Jesuit University blessed its new athletic field Tuesday after months of construction work to install a new synthetic turf. WJU Senior Vice President for Mission and Ministry Rev. Bill Rickle, S.J. gave the blessing on Bishop Schmitt Field just before the inaugural women’s lacrosse game was held.
Work on Phase I of the renovation project started last September. The university's men's and women's soccer, lacrosse and track teams and rugby team will use the field. Wheeling Central Catholic High School will also play their home football games on the WJU campus starting this fall.
The field won’t officially be dedicated until later this fall when Phase II is completed. Phase II consists of a new track surface.
The cost of Phase I was about $1 million.
