WHEELING, W.Va., May 2, 2016 – A ground breaking ceremony was held Monday at Wheeling Jesuit University for the expansion of its press box at Bishop Schmitt Field.
During a ceremony held at the site, members of the WJU community along with Wheeling Attorney Robert Fitzsimmons and his family, gathered to break ground where the new 600-square-foot press box will be built.
Pictured at the ground breaking ceremony are (from left) Sunni Fitzsimmons, Clayton Fitzsimmons, Robert Fitzsimmons, Rev. James Fleming, S.J., WJU president, Kayleen Fitzsimmons and Rocky Fitzsimmons.
Thanks to the generosity of the Fitzsimmons Foundation, the new press box will be completed before WJU fall sports begin and Wheeling Central Catholic High School kicks off its football season in mid-August. The foundation’s generous gift for the project is part of the university’s ongoing Homefield Advantage Campaign.
"Bob and the whole Fitzsimmons family have been strong supporters of the Homefield Advantage Campaign. Bob’s gift shows his continued belief in Wheeling Jesuit University, Wheeling Central Catholic High School and our community. We’re looking forward to the completion of our press box, which will bear the name of the Fitzsimmons Foundation,” said Rev. James Fleming, S.J., Wheeling Jesuit president.
“Wheeling Jesuit University is a preeminent academic institution that is a major part of the Ohio Valley community. It provides outstanding educational opportunities, jobs and many other benefits to our residents and children. By supporting Wheeling Jesuit we are helping to ensure that these opportunities remain in the greater Wheeling area for years to come,” said Fitzsimmons.
The project’s first phase will begin next week, beginning with the demolition of the current structure. Once demolition is complete, four rooms will be constructed that will make up the new structure. According to Mike Price of McKinley & Associates, designers for project, the new press box is being built to allow for future expansion, including a second story.
Project BEST contractors will oversee the construction work.
