WHEELING, W.Va., July 7, 2016 – The Board of Trustees of Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU) recently passed a resolution
in support of developing and growing an effective partnership in
education between the University and the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. This strategic partnership will:
- advance the mission of WJU as the only Catholic university in West Virginia
- further the natural relationship and partnership the two institutions have shared for six decades
- maintain the Jesuit identity of the university while expanding its services to people of West Virginia and Appalachia
- create long-term financial solutions for WJU while working collaboratively with Wheeling Hospital to develop and expand health science programs for the benefit of the people of this region
This partnership is the next logical step in the continuing relationship between two institutions with a shared mission, begun in 1952 when Archbishop Swint invited the Society of Jesus to found WJU. With the blessing and support of Bishop Michael J. Bransfield of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, this partnership will advance the Wheeling Jesuit mission.
The deepening of this long-term relationship will further the pastoral initiatives set forth during Bishop Bransfield's 11-year tenure as bishop, which have focused on critical issues related to
children, the elderly, and most importantly, the health and wellness of the people of Appalachia. During an era when religious orders are combining resources or selling assets, this partnership with the Diocese assures the continued Catholic identity of Wheeling Jesuit. It also helps the university transition from a school that is surviving to an institution that can flourish.
WJU's students, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors and friends can be assured that there will be significant investment in our university in the months ahead. We want to personally thank Bishop Bransfield for his vision and leadership during the past year of planning.
Wheeling Jesuit University is poised for a stable renewal of administrative leadership that fosters academic innovation and student success. A purposeful review of our administrative structure and programs is underway, while our faculty will continue to provide excellent instruction in the Jesuit tradition.
We look forward to continued conversations regarding this partnership between Wheeling Jesuit University and the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.
