Wheeling Jesuit University Space Grant Scholars Announced
Five Wheeling Jesuit University students recently received scholarships from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium (WVSGC).
The scholarships will be used for the students' education at the University. In an effort to enhance their chosen field of study, the Space Grant Scholars are working with a mentor from the Center for Educational Technologies (CET) on Wheeling Jesuit’s campus.
Scholars include the following:
Rebecca Bush, a senior elementary education major from Wheeling, W.Va. Cindy Stock of the Challenger Learning Center is serving as her mentor.
Timothy Krupica, a senior elementary education major from Wheeling, W.Va.; Troy Krupica, a sophomore nuclear medicine major from Wheeling, W.Va.; and Amber Hoffer, a junior biology major from Wheeling, W.Va. Meri. Cummings, Ph.D., science resource teacher at the CET, is serving as their mentor.
Rebecca Grayham, a junior psychology major from Wheeling, W.Va. Steven McGee, Ph.D., senior educational researcher at the CET is serving as Grayham’s mentor.
Space Grant scholars must be U.S. citizens, and full-time undergraduate students with 3.0 or higher grade point averages. The students must also have matching non-federal support.
The NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium was established in August 1991 and includes five West Virginia universities and six West Virginia colleges. The mission of the NASA WVSGC is to develop a statewide infrastructure that will enhance the state's competitiveness in aerospace research, education and industrial activities. The Consortium aims to capture, channel and enhance the interests and activities of current and potential scientists and engineers in its member institutions.
U.S.News & World Report ranks Wheeling Jesuit University 16th in the "Best Master’s Universities in the South," making it the highest ranked institution in West Virginia for the seventh consecutive year. The 65-acre campus located in Wheeling, W.Va., offers more than 30 undergraduate programs of study and six graduate degrees to about 1,500 students each year. Wheeling Jesuit -- the only Catholic institution of higher education in West Virginia -- has a student-to-faculty ratio of 13 to 1 and has 15 intercollegiate NCAA Division II athletic teams. The University's outstanding facilities include 15 modern buildings and residence halls, a 100,000 square-foot recreation center and a new $1.5 million soccer/track and field complex. The campus is home to the Robert C. Byrd National Technology Transfer Center, the Erma Ora Byrd Center for Educational Technologies, a Challenger Learning Center and the Clifford M. Lewis Appalachian Institute.
