1.0 PURPOSE
This policy defines who may speak officially on behalf of Wheeling Jesuit University to the news media.
2.0 POLICY STATEMENT
2.1 Policy Statement
University communications with the news media are managed by the Wheeling Jesuit University Communications Office, which is located in the University Office of Advancement, and which serves as the liaison between the University and the public. This Office is responsible for a broad range of editorial publications and other public relations functions. The Communications Office serves as the primary point of contact for media who are seeking either comment on an issue or experts to address a particular subject. The Communications Office is the only official conduit for communications between the University and the public.
2.2 Definitions
- News Media: Any and all forms of publicly transmitted communications including, but not limited to, television, radio, print media (newspapers, magazines, periodicals), and social media.
- University Spokesperson: The Communications Office representatives are designated as primary point of contact with the media unless otherwise stated or directed by either the Communications Office or the Office of the President. The Executive Director is the designated university spokesperson, unless otherwise designated by the President.
2.3 Campus constituents who are contacted by the media are to forward any and all media requests to the Communications Office. The Communications Office will then designate the appropriate response or responder, which may or may not include the individual who was originally contacted.
2.4 Campus constituents must consult with the Communications Office before agreeing to an interview or to provide information if the interview or the inquiry is related to University matters.
2.5 Policy Compliance
This policy complies with the full scope and intent of all University policies, including the University Whistleblower and Information Security policies.
3.0 AUTHORIZATION
The Director of Human Resources, in conjunction with the President, has the authority to change or modify this policy at any time with or without notice, and with the approval of the Board of Trustees through the University President.
