Employees should not engage in outside employment which poses a conflict of interest with their duties at Wheeling Jesuit University, conflicts or is concurrent with the work hours at the University, or directly interferes with the performance of their job.

2.1 Definition

2.1.1 Outside Employment - Includes employment with another organization, consulting, self-employment, etc, whether on a voluntary nature or for pay.

2.1.2 Conflict of Interest - refers to a situation in which an employee has a vested interest sufficient to appear to influence the objective exercise of that employee's duties within the University.

2.2 Guidelines

2.2.1 Full-time and part-time employees who wish to engage in any form of outside employment are required to notify their immediate supervisor and, if there appears to be a conflict of interest or the outside employment potentially interferes with the employees University job, have written permission from their immediate supervisor.

2.2.2 At all times, regardless of their outside employment activities, employees are expected to maintain a satisfactory level of performance in their University job.

2.2.3 Employees who are on paid sick leave (full or partial days), FMLA leave, and Short Term Disability (STD) who cannot perform their primary job for the University are prohibited from working a second job, or "moonlighting," while they are on paid sick leave, FMLA leave, and short term disability.

2.3 Conflict of Interest

2.3.1 Whenever the outside employment possibly conflicts with the employee's University job, the employee must refer to the University's Information Security policy if applicable and any confidentiality requirements specified in their offer letters.

2.3.2 In all cases, the University prohibits the performance of non-University work while on the job or with University equipment and/or supplies.

2.4 Community involvement

Nothing in this policy is meant to interfere with the University's desire to encourage employees to take part in civic, church and other public services where opportunities to exhibit good citizenship are present (refer to the University's policy on Catholic Jesuit Mission Benefits). Employees may utilize their allotted and accrued paid time off to engage in civic, church and other public activities or engage in such activities outside the University's scheduled work days and hours.

The Director of Human Resources has the authority to change, modify or approve exceptions to this policy at any time with or without notice and with the approval of the University President or his designee.
