Facts About Professional Communications

The Program

Wheeling Jesuit’s Professional Communications major prepares students for a career that demands effective writing and speaking skills in a broad range of styles using the latest communications technologies.  It enables them to work in fields that place a premium on good communication skills—professions ranging from public relations, journalism, multimedia and web authoring to law, teaching, marketing, management, business training and law.

Professional Communications major classes focus on mastering the content and technical expertise of one’s chosen field, the core classes focus on humanistic and critical thinking skills and free electives round out the personal educational plan.  Students may pursue concentrations in the Print Media Track (Reporting and Editing/Layout) or the New Media Track (Web Authoring & Multi-Media Authoring).

The Opportunities

Graduates of our program pursue advanced degrees in fields ranging from communications to law.  Graduates include a reporter for West Virginia’s largest newspaper, a web page designer for a prominent non-profit organization, and a grant writer for a university.  Our graduates enter careers in advertising, broadcasting, editing, development, graphic design, law, journalism, teaching, public relations, political speech writing, sales management, technical writing, and marketing.

Many students combine the Professional Communications major with English literature, business, marketing, management, pre-law, criminal justice, theology or one of the sciences. The University has several student-edited publications.
