Life at WJU
Greetings! My name is Chris Rouhier, and Iím a senior and double major (political science and history) at Wheeling Jesuit. Iím glad youíre looking at our political science program, and I hope I can offer some insight into the value a political science degree from WJU provides.
I initially chose to major in political science with law school in mind. In high school, I had always been interested in my history and government courses, and studying a field I liked seemed sensible. As a senior in the program, I can definitely say I made the right choice.
The political science program at WJU has proven extremely valuable. Our small class sizes lead to more individualized attention and engaging classroom discussion. The upper level courses have taught me to more thoroughly evaluate what I read, as well as to question my preconceived views of how government works and how it should work.
My professors have also encouraged me to get involved on campus. I am Co-Editor of the school newspaper, the Cardinal Connection, and President of WJUís History and Political Science Clubs. This year, we brought former Congressman and Secretary of State Ken Hechler to campus, and we are planning more programming throughout the year. Though balancing extra curricular activities and a rigorous schedule can be rough, it has ultimately been rewarding.
Currently, I am researching graduate school options. Though I am not certain where I will end up, I have no doubt that the political science departmentís emphasis on looking beyond the polling and pageantry of the political world will continue to help me develop as a thinker and as a man for others.
