Department of Political Science

Program Overview

The Political Science major provides the student an opportunity to look deeply at the way people govern themselves or are governed. One focus is on the American government, at the national, state and local levels. Another focus is on the way nations relate to one another, and the cultural differences which may explain both how foreign governments operate and how they deal with other countries in the international field. A third emphasis is to examine the theories and values people employ to establish what government and politics should be like.

Upon completion of the Political Science program, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Display familiarity with the basic concepts of government and politics. Show a general knowledge of the structure and functions of all levels of government.
  2. Explain the philosophical underpinnings of various forms of government, as well as an ability to understand relations among states.
  3. View and evaluate the output of the current American political process through a conscious paradigm.
  4. Employ a variety of tools to participate at all levels in American politics as opposed to remaining passive observers.
