China Info

"The Beijing program really tries to give an authentic and complete taste of China. Between interacting with other students, traveling and classroom study, there is always something going on." - Karen Marshall

The Beijing Center

Wheeling Jesuit students can take courses in theology, philosophy, business, social science, history, Chinese, and fine arts. English is the language of instruction for all courses taught. Students will also have the opportunity to take excursions to the Great Wall, Tibet, the Yangtze River, and Silk Road.

The Beijing Center (TBC) offers a unique mix of study, first-hand experience, morning language classes, and contemporary business courses. Education-based travel to places of historical and cultural significance are also a highlight of the program. Seminar-style courses on various aspects of Chinese culture are offered. Seminars include Chinese history, Chinese literature in translation, Chinese philosophy, Chinese religions, Chinese sociology and ethnology, Chinese politics, Sino-American relations, Chinese cinema, mass communications in China and the arts in China. Many of the course incorporate lectures and discussions with business and political leaders in Beijing. Courses in mass communications, cinema, international relations and economics are noted for meeting Chinese leaders. This "China study" program is not just a Chinese language program. It attempts to familiarize students wil all aspects of life in China.

A great effort is made to integrate the U.S. and Chinese students. Each student has a Chinese host family to help learn about Chinese family life. Each student also has a Chinese host student to show him or her "the ropes" of living in Beijing. TBC students are integrated with Chinese students by living on a university campus, having Chinese roommates for advanced language students and a private language tutor.
