Unemployment and Domestic Violence (1946-2006)
Unemployment has long been a serious issue in McDowell County: in late 2006 the official rate was 8.6%. Unemployment is a known risk factor for domestic abuse. Active since 1981, Stop Abusive Family Environments (SAFE), is a nonprofit organization of leaders, and survivors of domestic violence whose mission is to break that cycle. SAFE has won many awards for its efforts to provide housing and other help for women and children impacted by family violence and homelessness. The organization operates primarily in McDowell, Mercer, and Wyoming counties.

In 2002-2003, SAFE served 499 clients in McDowell County and over 2,200 clients from other areas. Some 60% of the children involved in domestic violence cases continue the cycle when they become adults. They either become an abuser or have a relationship with an abuser. To help break this cycle, while they reside in a SAFE facility, children are involved in programming that focuses on non-violent, drug-free activities as a way of life which is safe and nurturing.

Logan County's unemployment rate is relatively high at 5%. The Tug Valley Recovery Shelter, located in Williamson, serves domestic violence cases in Logan and Mingo Counties. Located in dowtown Logan, New Empowerment For Women Plus (NEW), is a "one-stop-shop" where women, minorities and low-income persons can get information and help. Problems related to lack of education and jobs, inadequate or inaccessible health care and housing; racism and discrimination are common. Like SAFE, NEW seeks to create peaceful responses to racial and domestic violence and abuse. Such community efforts show that compassion coupled with creative solutions are by no means lacking in urban centers and counties hit hard by economic downturns.
