Professor Paul Orr Remains Active Despite Retirement

Paul Orr
Retirement has barely slowed life for Dr. Paul Orr, who ended his 40-year teaching career at Wheeling Jesuit University in 1996.
Orr continues to be professionally active, presenting a scholarly paper on Canadian literature to the Texas Popular Culture Association and another on legendary lovers Romeo and Juliet to the West Virginia Shakespeare Society in Huntington.
He also recently appeared in the play "Mollyy Sweeney" at Wheeling's Towngate Theater and has traveled in the past year to Arizona, Canada and Honduras, where his daughter lives.
"I do miss the classroom," Orr said, "The stimulation of students and the stimulation of reading great stuff, of listening to them and hearing the things they wrote. I was sharing their lives by reading their compositions."
Orr wrote and directed several one-act plays at Wheeling Jesuit and supported the school's theater program throughout his time at the university. He also established an annual tradition of taking student groups to the Shakespeare festival at Stratford-on-Avon, Canada. He is preparing for his 27th consecutive trip this spring.
In all, Orr taught for 48 years including a stint at Georgetown University before coming to Wheeling Jesuit. He has had the satisfaction of seeing three of his former students go on to become college presidents.
Orr served as chair or acting chair of the WJU English department for 15 years and was associated with six different presidents and 111 deans.
"I have all good memories," Orr said. "It was a pleasure associating with the students and watching them do things in plays and presentations. I also enjoyed taking part in trips and getting to know them on a good basis in the classroom."
