John Aluise, Ph.D.
Class of 1964
Marketing Services, Human Resources and Corporate Administration

John Aluise, Ph.D. worked for 35 years in the private and public sectors serving in managerial roles in marketing services, human resources and corporate administration. He held faculty positions at three state universities, a private college, a community hospital and an academic medical center. As an organizational consultant he has worked with more than 50 organizations, primarily in the health care field, throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.   He has also presented to national and regional audiences.

Following his retirement, John taught fifth grade for two years at St. Thomas More School in Chapel Hill. He remains active as a volunteer teacher, tutor and basketball coach for the school. John and his wife Barbara also volunteer in several church ministries.

His experience as a management educator started with the B. F. Goodrich Company in sales and management training. In 1973, he joined Dr. Ed Shahady ‘60 in the family medicine program at Akron City Hospital, where he designed and implemented practice management and behavioral science training programs for family practice residents. He continued his association with Dr. Shahady in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina in 1977. During his 17 years at UNC, his roles included residency and departmental program development, practice management education and faculty development.

While at the University of North Carolina, he worked closely with the AHEC programs in Charlotte, Asheville and Greensboro, as well as community practitioners. He held a joint appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology for five years, where he offered resident physicians a “bonus curriculum” to help them make the transition from residency to reality.

Dr. Aluise’s research and scholarly work included both practice management and leadership of professional organizations. He has conducted management development programs, consulted with academic medicine departments and medical practices, and published extensively in health care management literature.

As an organizational consultant, Dr. Aluise has facilitated strategic planning meetings for governmental agencies, non-profit organizations and single and multi-specialty medical practices, including preparing documentation of the plans and evaluation methods. Several organizations retained Dr. Aluise to assist managers and staff with the implementation and evaluation stages. He has conducted extensive client satisfaction research including focused groups, personal interviews and surveys.

Dr. Aluise served in an executive capacity for a franchise of a national home health and medical staffing company. In this role he was a member of the company’s executive committee, directed the human resources function and conducted education programs for over 300 managers, staff and caregivers. Dr. Aluise was also responsible for the company's quality improvement program, which involved an annual client satisfaction study with input from patients, family members and caregiver staff.
