Choral Music

Two Choral Music ensembles perform on WJU's campus: The Music Ministry Choirs and the University Chamber Singers.

The Music Ministry Choirs, which also include approximately a dozen instrumentalists who join with their vocal counterparts in the fulfillment of their liturgical duties, enliven and give musical shape to congregational singing and participation in each of the three scheduled Sunday masses in the Chapel of Mary and Joseph. As collegial colleagues of student Eucharistic ministers and presiders, the Chapel musicians fulfill a ministry of music that includes inspiration and an exercise of pastoral gifts that is at the heart of the purpose of liturgy.

The University Chamber Singers fulfill musical artistic goals by presenting polished performances of choral music for mixed voices at an annual Christmas Concert and at university gatherings such as inaugurations, baccalaureate masses, and commencement exercises. These Singers also form the core of student participation in the annual GAMBOL musical.

GAMBOL MUSICAL: April 10-13, 2014
BACCALAUREATE and COMMENCEMENT: May 17-18, 2014

Director of Choral Music
A native of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Robert Troeger directs the WJU Chamber Singers and coordinates the musicians of the Chapel of Mary and Joseph at WJU. He holds degrees in music and religion from Carnegie Mellon University, The Cleveland Institute of Music, and Yale University. A proponent of contemporary music, he made his debut as organist in 1979 with the Cleveland Orchestra and regularly performs the organ works of Philip Glass. Previously he performed as organist and keyboardist with the Wheeling Symphony and conducted the Pittsburgh premiere of Lennox Berkeley's Four Poems of St. Teresa of Avila with Marianne Cornetti and the Pittsburgh Symphony. Since 1989 Troeger has served as Music Director and Organist of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Wheeling, where in 1997 he instituted a relationship between the parish and the Royal School of Church Music (UK) whose training schemes have enriched the lives of many Ohio Valley young people. In 1992 he became a fellow of the American Guild of Organists and is a winner of various competitions sponsored by the A.G.O. In 1985 he was a semi-finalist in the St. Albans International Organ Festival Competition (improvisation category), St. Albans, England. In Europe Mr. Troeger has appeared as organ soloist in the newly reconstructed Frauenkirche in Dresden, and as harpsichordist with the Matthaus-Kantorei of Luzern. Since 2010 he also has served as mentor and music educator at the Children's Home of Wheeling.
