Lakers Explode in Third Period to Secure 10-6 Win Over Wheeling Jesuit

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Lakers men's lacrosse team outshot the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals 58-17 in route to a 10-6 victory Wednesday. Mike Thon and Mike Bartlett each had six points on the day to lead the Lakers offensively. Mercyhurst improves to 7-3 overall while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 4-5 this season.

Thon scored first for the Lakers off of a pass from Bartlett at the 9:39 mark in the first period. After Thon's goal, the Lakers struggled to find the back of the net and the Cardinal Jack Malone took advantage. Malone put in back-to-back goal in a 37 second span at 3:39 to put Wheeling Jesuit up 2-1. Mercyhurst's Aaron Manzer tied it up at two though with 38 seconds left in the first.

In the second period, Barlett and Scott Sullivan tallied goals for the Lakers before Cardinal Mike Jaques put one past goalkeeper Jason LaShomb. Mercyhurst went into halftime leading 4-3. The Lakers outshot Wheeling Jesuit 32-7 in the first thirty minutes of play.

Determined to push through, Mercyhurst exploded out of the gates in the third period on a goal from Thon at the 13:49 mark. Bartlett would then score two more goals and teammate Jordan Witt tallied one for a 4-0 Mercyhurst run to close out the third period.

Wheeling Jesuit continued to battle back and got two quick goals from Trevor Veres and Malone to bring themselves within three. Again Thon stepped up and rattled off two more goals to shut down the comeback and give the Lakers a 10-5 advantage with 6:12 left. Malone would add one more at 2:29 but Mercyhurst held onto possession in the final two minutes to secure the win.

Mercyhurst won the ground ball war 45-30 and completed 14-of-20 clear attempts to the Cardinals' 6-of-20. The Lakers also smothered Wheeling Jesuit on the face offs, winning 14-of-20.

Thon ended the day with four goals and two assists and Bartlett contributed three goals and three assists. Manzer, Witt and Sullivan each added a goal a piece.

In between the pipes, LaShomb collected eight saves and six groundballs. Wheeling Jesuit goalkeeper Joe Sims kept his team in the game with 22 saves and nine groundballs.

Mercyhurst will host Notre Dame de Namur Saturday at 3 p.m.

Late-game Comeback Falls Short for Cards

The Wheeling Jesuit Lacrosse team was back in action against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. The Cards were the first to get on the board off of a shot from John Miller. He added another goal in the first half while the Cardinals kept good pace with the Crusaders. However, Belmont Abbey had the upper hand at half time leading the game 6-4. In the third quarter, John Miller set up Trevor Veres to get the Cardinals within a goal of tying the Crusaders. However, Belmont Abbey scored three more goals and the score going into the final quarter was 9-6. A late game surge fell short and the Cardinals lost the game 10-9. The next home game for the Cards will be on April 20th when they face Notre Dame Namur University.

Cardinals defeat Dominican College

The Wheeling Jesuit Lacrosse team played its first game on the James LaRosa Field on Friday. Prior to the game, the Cardinals paid tribute to their fallen coach. Kevin Tyska passed away this January and the team honored him by having his children and wife step onto the field before the game. The crowd, staff, and players took a moment of silence before the game began.

From the beginning, the Cardinals played with a great passion scoring the first goal of the game. However, Dominican proved it would not go down easily answering right back. The two teams battled exchanging goals with one another. Dominican pulled ahead at half time by a score of 6-5. Both goalies were outstanding. Joe Sims, the Cardinal goalie made 14 saves in the game. Dominican’s Joe Assante recorded 15 saves. In the end the Cardinals came out on top. They were led by Trevor Veres who had 3 goals and an assist. Jack Malone was not far behind with 2 goals and an assist for the day. Eric Jenkins recorded 2 goals of his own with the remaining goals coming from John Miller and Jeff Arneson. Dominican’s Alex Jones was the dominant player for the Chargers, scoring 4 goals. The final score was 9-8 in favor of the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals.

The next home game for the Cards will be on Saturday, April 12th against Belmont Abbey College at 1:00.
