a 10-6
victory
Wednesday.
Mike
Thon
and
Mike
Bartlett
each had
six
points
on the
day to
lead the
Lakers
offensively.
Mercyhurst
improves
to 7-3
overall
while
Wheeling
Jesuit
falls to
4-5 this
season.
Thon
scored
first
for the
Lakers
off of a
pass
from
Bartlett
at the
9:39
mark in
the
first
period.
After
Thon's
goal,
the
Lakers
struggled
to find
the back
of the
net and
the
Cardinal
Jack
Malone
took
advantage.
Malone
put in
back-to-back
goal in
a 37
second
span at
3:39 to
put
Wheeling
Jesuit
up 2-1.
Mercyhurst's
Aaron
Manzer
tied it
up at
two
though
with 38
seconds
left in
the
first.
In
the
second
period,
Barlett
and
Scott
Sullivan
tallied
goals
for the
Lakers
before
Cardinal
Mike
Jaques
put one
past
goalkeeper
Jason
LaShomb.
Mercyhurst
went
into
halftime
leading
4-3. The
Lakers
outshot
Wheeling
Jesuit
32-7 in
the
first
thirty
minutes
of play.
Determined
to push
through,
Mercyhurst
exploded
out of
the
gates in
the
third
period
on a
goal
from
Thon at
the
13:49
mark.
Bartlett
would
then
score
two more
goals
and
teammate
Jordan
Witt
tallied
one for
a 4-0
Mercyhurst
run to
close
out the
third
period.
Wheeling
Jesuit
continued
to
battle
back and
got two
quick
goals
from
Trevor
Veres
and
Malone
to bring
themselves
within
three.
Again
Thon
stepped
up and
rattled
off two
more
goals to
shut
down the
comeback
and give
the
Lakers a
10-5
advantage
with
6:12
left.
Malone
would
add one
more at
2:29 but
Mercyhurst
held
onto
possession
in the
final
two
minutes
to
secure
the win.
Mercyhurst
won the
ground
ball war
45-30
and
completed
14-of-20
clear
attempts
to the
Cardinals'
6-of-20.
The
Lakers
also
smothered
Wheeling
Jesuit
on the
face
offs,
winning
14-of-20.
Thon
ended
the day
with
four
goals
and two
assists
and
Bartlett
contributed
three
goals
and
three
assists.
Manzer,
Witt and
Sullivan
each
added a
goal a
piece.
In
between
the
pipes,
LaShomb
collected
eight
saves
and six
groundballs.
Wheeling
Jesuit
goalkeeper
Joe Sims
kept his
team in
the game
with 22
saves
and nine
groundballs.
Mercyhurst
will
host
Notre
Dame de
Namur
Saturday
at 3
p.m.
