Reigning WVIAC champions,
the Wheeling Jesuit University Lady Cardinals won the WVIAC Northern Regional
held at Oglebay's Crispin course Sept. 23 and 24.
Coached by Sue Vail, the Wheeling Jesuit ladies were three shots ahead of
West Liberty and Ohio Valley University at the end of Sunday’s play.
After Monday's closing round, Wheeling Jesuit won by 17 shots over West
Liberty and by 28 shots over Ohio Valley U. Seven WVIAC teams entered the
tournament, including Glenville, Ohio Valley, Seton Hill, West Virginia State,
West Virginia Wesleyan, WJU and WLSC.
Coach Vail is proud of her young team, now in its fourth year of existence
and already claiming the WVIAC crown twice. Her women have also been recognized
by the NGCA (National Golf Coaches Association) for their academic excellence,
coming in at the number eight spot in the national poll, with a GPA of 3.673.
Cardinal team members include: senior Marissa Wiethe of Wheeling; junior
Valerie Grimes of Pittsburgh, Pa.; senior Sara Hicks of Moundsville, W.Va.;
sophomore Steffany Krieg of Elida, Ohio; junior Caitlin Beam of Canonsburg, Pa.
and freshman Jackie Eib of Arcanum, Ohio.
"I am very proud of our women golf team, they are great golfers and wonderful
students," said Vail.
