Wheeling Jesuit University 2006 WVIAC
Champs
The women’s soccer team proved that they are
the best team in the conference, as they downed Concord 1-0 in
overtime to take the WVIAC Championship.
Junior Katie Groff won the game for the Cards
five minutes into overtime. Michelle Diapola recorded the assist. WJU was out-shot by Concord 19-13, but goalkeeper Jessica Park
grabbed 11 saves to give the offense a chance to win the game.
The championship was a long road for the
Cards, who defeated Shepherd in the first round of play 2-0. They
were then pitted against Charleston in the semi-final game, and
Concord in the final game. Both teams handed WJU their only
conference loss during regular season play.
The Cards had their revenge on UC as they
pounded them 4-0 to move onto the Championship game. Four different
Cards scored, while Park and the defense held UC to nine shots. Park recorded six saves. Liz Lipovsky, Kara Blacker, Katie Groff,
and Jamie Albert each put the ball in the back of the net. Ashley Hitz and Lindsey Getz each recorded an assist.
The Cards then took revenge on Concord who
beat them earlier in the season, 2-0. After a scoreless game, with
many opportunities for both teams, the conference saw WJU once again
rise as 2006 Conference Champs.
