Lady Cards Fall Short in First Round Wheeling Jesuit 59,UPJ 62
Johnstown, Pa., March 2, 2009--- Lindsay Cale scored 13 of her game-high 28 points in the first half to help the fifth-seeded University of Pitt-Johnstown basketball team advance to Wednesday's West Virginia Conference Tournament quarterfinals with a victory against No. 12 Wheeling Jesuit.
The Lady Cats held Wheeling Jesuit to 17.9 percent shooting in the first half on their way to building a 32-12 halftime advantage.
The Cardinals opened the second half on a 9-2 run to pull to within 34-21 with 15:46 to play. The Lady Cats answered with a 13-4 run during the next 4:40, capped by Qiuana Brown's 3-pointer, to extend the lead to 47-25 with 11:16 left. Pitt-Johnstown eventually rebuilt the lead to 18 points with 3:07 remaining, but Wheeling Jesuit charged back to outscore the Lady Cats 19-2 and cut the deficit to 60-59 with :25 on the clock. However, Cale's two free-throws with :13 sealed the victory for Pitt-Johnstown.
Shayla Holenka's 16 points and five assists led four Wheeling Jesuit players who scored in double-figures. Megan Stuvek (13 points), Lindsay Stuckey (12 points) and Cassy Sanderson (10 points) also scored in double-digits, while Stuvek grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Cardinals, who's season came to an end with a 12-15 overall record.
