Noah Mull Fans 11 in 6innings 09’ Strikeout leader doesn’t disappoint in season opener
There is no letter ‘K’ in Noah Mull’s name, but after Tuesday afternoon’s outing against the University of Charleston (0-2), there were eleven of them next to it in the scorebook. The senior southpaw was absolutely dominant in his first start of the young 2010 season. Mull’s final stat line read 6 complete innings, 11 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 1 earned run. Mull struck out four out of the first five hitters he faced and didn’t look back. A lone error in the 6th inning with 2 outs, allowed 2 unearned runs to score, tied the game at three and prevented Mull from getting the win.
After the Cardinals (3-1) failed to score in the top of the 7th, freshman Shane Sullivan held Charleston scoreless in the bottom of the last to force extras and set up redshirt freshman Andrew Kozusko’s heroics. In the top half of extra frames, Kosusko took an 0-2 offering and shot it into right field to put the red birds up 4-3. Sullivan came in to throw a perfect bottom of the 8th and pick up his second win in as many days.
Indian Creek product Seth Fluharty finished the day 3-4 with two RBI’s. Weirton alum Steven Buffo was 2-2 and redshirt freshman Corey Hull finished with a double and RBI to round out the last of Wheeling Jesuit’s RBI parade.
In game two true freshman and recent Linsly graduate Alex Kozusko twirled a gem in his first collegiate start. Kozusko scattered just 4 hits over 6 1/3 innings of work with 5 strikeouts and only 2 walks. Impressive was that out of Kozusko’s 79 pitches, 54 were strikes. The Cardinals added two run in the bottom of the 5th without the luxury of a hit as Charleston pitchers put together 5 consecutive walks. Kozusko’s outing was cut short of a complete game after a one out single in the top of the 7th, and yet again freshman Shane Sullivan was call on for the save. Sullivan got the last two outs for the save that brings his total up to two wins and a save in the four games that Wheeling Jesuit has played.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action Wednesday, March 10th against Winona State. First pitch to be thrown at 3:00 pm.
