Cardinals Open with a Split
Winter Haven, Fl, Mar. 7, 2010---Wheeling Jesuit men's baseball team opened the 2010 season in Winter Haven, FL with a doubleheader on Sunday morning against Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals split the twinbill with a 4-3 win and a 7-2 loss.
In the early game, senior Matt Taylor started the season with a three-up, three-down first inning while striking out the lead-off man. Taylor saw 4.1 innings of work giving up 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 free passes and 3 k's. Freshmen Parker Lang and Shane Sullivan hurled the next 2.2 innings allowing one hit while Sullivan picked up his first collegiate win.
Junior Dominic San Felippo led the Cardinals with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and scored a run, while juniors Mike Ludewig, Mark Linkinoggor, and Ryan Venderlic all collected hits. Freshman Jordan Kraus led-off the seventh with a double down the line followed by Linkinoggor's walk-off single.
The Cards scattered seven hits for the their four runs and the first win of the season.
In the night cap, Jesuit suffered the loss as freshman Tim Geibel went for 3.2 innings, giving up three earned runs and five total. Venderlic went 3-for-3 at the plate with 2 doubles and a single whlie Krause and freshman Andrew Nemecek had one apiece.
The Cards will be back in action on Monday, March 3rd against conference opponents from the University of Charleston. The doubleheader is slated for 11:00 a.m. |
