Wheeling Jesuit’s Cedric Harris Named
WVIAC Freshman of the Year

Wheeling, WV, March 2, 2009---Wheeling Jesuit’s Cedric Harris earned the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Freshman of the Year Award, making him the first Cardinal Basketball Player to capture this award.

Cedric Harris made an immediate impact in the Wheeling Jesuit backcourt, averaging a team-best 19.3 points and 5.7 assists per game during his freshman campaign which placed him eighth among the league’s top scorers.  The 19.3 points per game ranks as the nation’s best scoring freshman in NCAA Division II.

“Cedric did a good job for us at the point guard position.  It’s not easy turning the offense over to a freshman, but he handled it well.  He did a great job getting us into our offensive sets and improved our transition game with his speed and ability to score and create for others,” said Head Coach Danny Sancomb.

The 5’11” point guard from Zanesville, OH led the Cardinals in steals with 52. He scored a career high 29 twice this season, one being his collegiate debut.  He finished the season with 149 assists and recorded three double-doubles with points and assists.  The most impressive double-double performance came in a win over Ohio Valley University racking up 28 points and 11 assists.  The freshman sensation had 16 games scoring 20 plus points and a league leading 92.5% (74 of 80) from the free throw line.

“I’m humbled to win this award,” said Harris.  “I owe a lot to my teammates because as much as I try to run the show, they make me a better player.”

Cedric was also recognized to the WVIAC Second Team All-Conference squad and a top performer academically acquiring a 3.5 GPA in his first semester.

The Cardinals will open the first round of the WVIAC Conference Tournament in Buckhannon, WV against #8 West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:30 p.m.
