Cardinals Add Seven During Second Signing Period
Wheeling, W.V. – On Monday, August 08, 2011, Wheeling Jesuit head coach, Jay Sothoron, announced the incoming men’s lacrosse class for 2012 which includes 11 student-athletes from five different states and Canada. Four of these individuals committed to WJU during the fall signing period while the remaining seven used the second period to sign National Letters of Intent.
"We are extremely pleased with our recruiting class for the 2012 season. We are excited with the talent and athleticism of our future student-athletes. We did a good job filling some holes and feel that all of these recruits have the ability to contribute to our young team. We are excited to get them on campus and start with fall ball,” Sothoron Said.

Sothoron on Luebbe: “Corey is a very talented athlete who has barely scratched the surface. He is big, strong and very agile. We are very excited to see him develop. I think once he understands our system he will be an instant impact. He has the ability to shut down attackmen.. Sothoron on Gillespie: “Jared impressed our staff with his lacrosse IQ and his decision making with the ball. He is a very well rounded player who can cover, play good team defense, and clear well. He also is great on ground balls. He has led his HS team the last two seasons in the groundball category. That is rare for a defenseman to do. With us graduating two senior poles he will have a chance to push for time.”
Adam Lewis (Goalie/Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson High School) 5’11*170lbs 2011 Named 1st Team OCC…2nd Team Region…Played on the Velocity Premier Travel Team…2010 Hilliard Davidson (D1) finished 19-3 ranked #7th in laxpower for the state of Ohio…21-4 as varsity starter…2010-2nd team all state…1st team all region…2nd team all conference.
Sothoron on Lewis: “I saw a lot of goalies play this past summer and I feel he is as good as any high school goalie out there. He was a big factor in his team’s success. With us only having two goalies currently on our roster it was important for us to bring in another strong goalie. Adam has the tools to be a very good goalie at the D2 level. He will push for time from day one.” Patrick O’Neil (LSM-Defense/ Madison Heights, MI/Bishop Foley High School) 6’3*195lbs 2011 All Catholic League…2011 Team Captain…Bishop Foley Scholar Athlete Award…2010 Team Captain… All-League… All Catholic and Defensive Most Valuable Player…2010 Captain and All-Academic team…Varsity starter 2008-2010…Earned four varsity letters in Lacrosse, Football, Basketball, and Bowling…Played for Champion Elite travel team.
Sothoron on O’Neil: “Patrick is a talented athlete who is very long and athletic. He is very athletic with great size and speed. He is a versatile athlete who can also play shortstick D Middie. We look for him to fit in our system very well.”
Matt Bergman (Defense/Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) 6’1*190lbs Bergman was a starting defenseman for Washington Township High School in New Jersey…They finished 12-3 losing to North Hunterdon HS in the state playoffs…Matt participated in the Rutgers lacrosse camp where he played very well.
Coach Sothoron on Bergman: “Matt brings talented depth to our defense. He will have an opportunity to prove himself this fall. He comes from a strong high school with expectations of winning. We look forward seeing Matt develop as a player.”
Ryan Scott (Defense/Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall-Essex CC) 5’9*190lbs High School four year Varsity starter…Captain junior and senior year…2nd Team All County Junior year…1st Team All County Senior year…Region XX JUCO Champions…JUCO National Championship runner up…Ryan will be getting his MBA at WJU.
Coach Sothoron on Scott: “We are thrilled to have Ryan join us. We think his maturity and leadership will be a huge asset to our team. Ryan is a well-rounded player who can cover and has a very high lacrosse IQ. Ryan has veteran experience that will really benefit our youthful squad.”
Tyler Buchan (Midfield/Burnaby, BC Canada/Holy Cross High School) 5’9*160lbs 2011-Holy Cross HS Lacrosse MVP…Burnaby Intermediate A-Lacrosse Team MVP…In 23 games he had 61 goals and 36 assists…BC Intermediate A-League MVP…BC Intermediate A-1st Team All-Star…BC High School Lacrosse Championship Tournament MVP…SFU Maple Leaf Awards U-18 Team MVP…U-19 Adrenaline Challenge Tournament All-Star…BC HS football AAA Provincial All-Star…BC HS Football AAA Eastern Conference All-Star…Holy Cross HS Football MVP…2010 Burnaby minor box Intermediate A-1st Team MVP…Rated Top 10 field lacrosse players in BC…Rated #32 Top field lacrosse players in Canada by Inside Lacrosse…Burnaby U-16 field lacrosse Team MVP…2009 Burnaby minor box lacrosse midget A-1st Team MVP…U-15 World Field Lacrosse Championships gold medal and game MVP…SFU Maple Leaf Award U-15 Offensive MVP…Burnaby U-15 Field Lacrosse Team MVP…As a top player for the Burnaby Mountain Selects travel team Tyler played in numerous camps and tournaments during his HS career.
Sothoron on Buchan: “Tyler has something you can’t teach, which is his first step and nose for the goal. He may not be the biggest kid on the field but he is very tough. He always finds away to create offense and loves to go to the front of the goal. He is an extremely talented player who is always a triple threat. He can hurt you with the ball, without the ball, and he is a very accurate finisher. We expect him to step right in and be a big threat from the midfield this season. He will be surrounded by a young but talented group of middies and he has the ability to make everyone around him better.”
Hunter Bushnell (Midfield/Windsor, Ontario Canada/St. Anne High School) 5’11*180lbs Indoor lacrosse teams played for are the Windsor Warlocks…Windsor Clippers (Junior B)…Hamilton Super Series Tournament MVP (11G, 12A, 27 Gb’s in 5 games)…Played for Greater Field Windsor field lacrosse…Also played Ice Hockey, Football, and Track and Field during his high school career…Participated on the Travel team 1763 over the summer.
Sothoron on Bushnell: “Hunter is a player who has a lot of potential. He is a well-rounded player who makes very few mistakes. In a way he is a throwback middie. He can play offense, defense, and is good in between the lines. I see him fitting in well and being productive as a freshman.”
Duston Doudelet (Att/MID/Toronto, Ontario Canada/East York Alternative HS) 5’10*160lbs 2011 played for the Toronto Beaches…U-19 Field-19 pts in 13 games- undefeated season…Junior B Box 27 pts in 18 games…Provincial U-19 Silver champions…Cherry Bomb winners High School A…All Area 2nd Team.
Sothoron on Doudelet: “Duston is a confident player who plays with a chip on his shoulder. He will take on anyone and he wants the ball. He is a tenacious player who is always involved with the offense. He will be a player who will see a lot of time whether at the attack or midfield. Good things happen when he has the ball in his stick. He will be an asset for us giving us talent and depth.”

Sothoron on Wickett: “Tyler really impressed me playing at the Uplax tournament last fall. He is a smart player who puts himself into situations where he can score. His strength is his powerful left-handed shot. He is a player who is always a threat to score when he has the ball in his stick. I think having a shot like his will really make the defense have to extend which open up plays for his teammates.”
