Jesuit Lacrosse Wins Third Straight, Improves to 7-3
The Wheeling Jesuit men’s lacrosse team is on a three game winning streak and improves to 7-3 on the season by defeating Division I opponent, University of Detroit Mercy, 14-7 on Saturday. The visiting Cardinals played in front of 703 spectators for UDM’s inaugural season and first-ever home lacrosse game.
The first period began with a defensive stance from both teams. Midway through the first, the UDM Titans had a 1-0 lead and the Cardinals quickly retaliated with five unanswered goals. Colin Jack threw two of his three goals in the first period, while John Miller, Jeff Arneson, and John Dunbar chipped in one each. Dunbar scored the first of his two goals with 16 seconds left in the period.
After an early Titan goal to begin the second period, the WJU offense exploded for five more goals, taking a 10-2 halftime lead. Eric Jenkins began the scoring frenzy with a goal at 8:48. Jack and Miller hit the back of the net for the second consecutive period, and finishing the run was Shawn Grimm and Kyle Lucas. Lucas also added four assists on the day.
For the third straight period, Detroit Mercy opened with the first goal, and the Jesuit offense responded with three of their own. Dunbar and Miller found the net again, and Mike Jacques recorded his first. The Titians cut the lead by one at the two minute mark and carried the momentum into the fourth by netting three. Eric Jenkins hit a shot from Kyle Lucas to extinguish the Titan run and seal the victory.
The lacrosse team will be back in action at home, hosting Notre Dame De Namur on Thursday, April 23rd at 7:00 P.M.
