Men’s Basketball Wins Opener Over Bethany in OT
West Liberty, WV, Nov. 20, 2009---The Wheeling Jesuit men’s basketball began season play against Bethany College on Friday night in the Wendy’s Classic at West Liberty University. The Cardinals came away with an 84-79 overtime win over the Bison.
In the first half, the Cardinals shot 58% from the field and 60% beyond the arc, taking a 43-36 advantage into the break. Sophmores Steve Catich and Obi Ukwuoma went a combined 9-11 for 18 points in the opening half while Pete Brogdan knocked down two of the Cardinals’ six three-pointers.
In the second half, Catich started a 9-0 run and pushed the lead to double digits but could not stop the Bison attack. Bethany fought back and took a 72-69 lead with 1:10 remaining. Catich struck again, knocking down a three-pointer to tie the game and freshman Recardo Gaddy hit two foul shots for a two point lead. Bethany would answer with two foul shots of their own, to send the game to overtime.
WJU opened the overtime period with two quick buckets for a four point advantage. They would hold on to the lead for the five minutes pulling away at the end by with two foul shots by Catich and a 84-79 victory.
Catich poured in a team high 24 and grabbed nine boards for the Cards while senior Greg Andrews and freshman Recardo Gaddy chipped in nine points each.
Wheeling Jesuit will return to West Liberty Saturday for the final night of the Hilltopper Classic, as they battle West Liberty at 7:30 p.m.
