Stephen Hawthorne Named to
DAKTRONICS NCAA DIVISION II 2nd Team All-Atlantic Region

November 17, 2009

Forward Jeremy Deighton, who led Slippery Rock to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional final, has been named the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Player of the Year.

Deighton had 21 goals and seven assists during his senior season and is one of a region-high six players from Slippery Rock’s PSAC championship squad on the All-Region team. Backs Patrick Conley and Thomas Pool are on the first team and midfielders Toby Bowser and Benjamin Lloyd and goalkeeper Greg Blum were named to the second team. All 13 of the first team selections in the region (four forwards, four midfielders, four backs, one goalkeeper) are eligible for All-America honors.

Millersville, the region’s top-ranked team for most of the year, is represented by four players on the first team in forward Kyle Loughlin, midfielder Pat Baffuto, back Thomas Bargmann and goalkeeper Matt Langione. Back Adam Keller was a second team selection.

Forward Mike Luecke, midfielder Justin Taucher and back Nick Helbig give California three selections on the first team.

Mercyhurst had two players mentioned in forward Billy Colton and midfielder Nicholas Thompson, and East Stroudsburg midfielder Toric Robinson rounds out the first team.

Atlantic Region champion Charleston had three players named to the second team. Forwards Dion Peters and Darko Karamatic, who scored the game-winning goal in Charleston’s 3-2 win over Slippery Rock on Sunday, and midfielder Predrag Ivanovic were selected from the Golden Eagles.

Davis & Elkins also had three second team picks in forward Bediako Swan, midfielder Daniel Kwafo and back James Kpainay.

Three schools had one player each on the third team – West Virginia Wesleyan forward Brett
Fackenthal, West Chester back Zach Weaver and Wheeling Jesuit back Stephen Hawthorne.

The Daktronics All-Region and All-America program uses an online nomination and voting process powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM and is selected by the sports information directors from institutions that sponsor men’s soccer in the Atlantic Region.
