Wheeling Jesuit Suffers First Conference Loss
Wheeling, WV, Sept. 23, 2009---Wheeling Jesuit University men's soccer team (5-2-1, 2-1) suffer their first conference loss to Davis & Elkins College (5-2, 3-0) on Wednesday evening at James LaRosa Stadium.
In the first period, WJU outshot D&E ten to nine although the Senators started scoring in the 6th minute. Their second goal came on a header in the 20th minute and another followed in the 28th minute. D&E took a 3-0 lead into the break.
Wheeling Jesuit would not allow a goal in the second period, and started their scoring drive late in the game. In the 77th minute, freshman Sam Bauman scored the Cardinals first goal off a pass from sophomore Victor Picchio.
They began to apply more offensive pressure, and the Senators defense sent the ball out of bounds giving WJU the second corner kick of the half. Junior Stephen Hawthorne bent the corner into the goal and put the Cards within one with two minutes remaining.
The Cardinals attempted a few more shots in the final minutes but failed to connect.
The Cardinals will travel to Philippi, WV for a conference game against Alderson-Broaddus College on Saturday, September 26th at 2 p.m.
