WVIAC Softball Tournament---Day One Recap

Vienna, WV, May 1, 2009---Top-seed West Virginia Wesleyan was one of the few favorites to emerge unscathed in a day of upsets and near-upsets at a rainy day one of the WVIAC Softball Tournament.  The regular-season champion Bobcats, Wheeling Jesuit, Seton Hill, and Glenville State are the lone unbeatens left standing before rain wiped out play for the evening.

Wesleyan, the Atlantic Region's sixth ranked squad, got a strong pitching effort from Patricia Moreno in a 4-1 victory against Shepherd.  The Bobcat ace scattered four hits to earn the victory.  Stephanie Wheeler, Carly McCullough and Katie Speaks notched two hits each to account for the Bobcat offense.

Seton Hill made their first trip to the WVIAC Tournament a success with a 4-1 triumph versus defending champion West Virginia State.  Louanne Wiegand earned the win for the Griffins as she limited State to five hits.  Jessi DiVittorio's two-run homer was the big blow for SHU.

#7 seed Glenville State pulled off a pair of victories.  The Pioneers snuck past West Liberty 2-1 in the morning's opener.  Karly Eskew's bottom of the seventh single scored Leanne Harris with the game-winner.  GSC exploded for five runs in the final two innings to upset second seeded Fairmont State 6-1 in the afternoon.  Mandy Parkulo, who earned both victories for GSC, worked around trouble to strand seven Falcon baserunners.

#6 seed Wheeling Jesuit also notched two wins.  The Cardinals edged Davis & Elkins 4-3 thanks to Angela Petros' three-run homer.  WJU then downed third-seeded Alderson-Broaddus 4-1.  The Cardinals were outhit 8-5, but received key home runs from Petros and Vanessa Ilovar.
