Day 3- Recap--West Virginia Wesleyan Slips Past Glenville State 6-5 For WVIAC Softball Tournament Title 5/2/2009
Vienna, WV, April 2, 2009---West Virginia Wesleyan battled out of the loser's bracket to claim three conscutive victories to earn the 2009 WVIAC Softball Tournament championship. The Bobcats completed their comeback run by ending seventh-seeded Glenville State's magical run in a 6-5 thriller.
WVWC (42-13), the WVIAC regular season champion, roared to a 5-1 lead after two innings in the championship tilt. However, Glenville (25-24) capitalized on three third inning errors by Wesleyan to post four runs and knot the game at 5-5.
Wesleyan responded with what turn out to be the decisive run in their half of the third. Desiree Sibera drew a one-walk, moved to second base on Lexi Rodgers' single, and came around to score on Trisha Thurston's two-out base hit.
The Lady Pioneers never got another runner past second as Patricia Moreno earned the win for Wesleyan by tossing 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. She fanned three and allowed three hits.
Mandy Parkulo was the tough luck losing pitcher after relieving starter Morgan Elswick. The junior only allowed three hits and one run in 4 1/3 innings, but was tagged with the loss after allowing the third inning run.
West Virginia Wesleyan forced the second championship contest by blanking Glenville State 8-0 in five innings behind Stephanie Wheeler's one-hitter.
The Bobcats were dumped into the loser's bracket earlier in the day by GSC. The Lady Pioneers earned a 4-1 victory in a contest completed after being suspended on Friday evening. Kohle Maynard homered for GSC in the win and pitchers Laura Childers and Mandy Parkulo combined to strand a dozen WVWC baserunners.
Wesleyan reached the championship by holding off Wheeling Jesuit 8-7. The Bobcats built an 8-2 edge after two innings in part thanks to Stephanie Wheeler's grand slam. WJU would battle back within a run, but saw their last real scoring chance snuffed out when Rachelle Carello was gunned down at the plate as the game's tying-run by Wesleyan leftfielder Katie Speaks to end the sixth inning.
