CARDINALS SPLIT WITH PIONEERS

Morgan Elswick singled through the right side to score Karly Eskew in the twelfth inning to lift Glenville State College to a 5-4 second-game win and a doubleheader split at Wheeling Jesuit University Tuesday afternoon.

Glenville State jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning on an RBI single by Eskew and a two-run double by Candace White.  Wheeling Jesuit tied the game with a three-spot of their own in the third inning when Angela Petros singled home a pair, one out after Brandy Jester singled home the Cardinals’ first run.

Courtney Kurowski homered to lead off the fourth and give Wheeling Jesuit a 4-3 lead, which held until the sixth inning, when Glenville’s Leanne Harris singled home Brooke Foster for the tying run, setting the stage for extra innings.

Wheeling Jesuit advanced runners into scoring position in each of the final eight innings, but was unable to score any of them.

Mandy Parkulo was the winning pitcher for the Pioneers, going all twelve innings, walking five and striking out seven.

Olivia Wamsley took the loss for the Cardinals, also going the distance, while walking three and striking out three.

In the first game, Jester pitched seven strong innings, scattering five hits to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a 3-2 victory.

Wheeling Jesuit’s Kurowski opened the scoring in the third inning, coming home on a two-out wild pitch after she singled to start the inning.  The Cardinals built a 3-0 lead in the fifth, with a Jaime Donato sacrifice fly scoring pinch runner Stacey Spicer and a wild pitch bringing home Vanessa Ilovar.

Glenville drew within 3-2 in the sixth on a two-run homerun by Elswick.  The Pioneers threatened in the seventh, getting two runners on, before Jester struck out the final two batters of the game.

Wheeling Jesuit moves to 10-13 overall, 4-2 in the WVIAC.  Glenville is now 9-12, 5-1 in conference play.

Wheeling Jesuit returns to action on Thursday afternoon when they play host to Gannon in a 3:00 start.
