Lady Cardinals' Tournament Recap

The Lady Cardinals Softball team had a rough weekend in Salem, Virginia, dropping five contests during the three day tournament.

During the first game vs. Lockhaven, the Lady Cards managed seven hits in the 4-1 loss. Angela Petros went 2-3, Samantha Kozbial hit a double, while Aleecia Sunagel, Olivia Wamsley, Courtney Kurowski, and Samantha Macioce all added singles. Sunagel’s single provided the team’s only RBI in the game. Wamsley pitched all seven innings, walking only two batters while striking out two and giving up three earned runs.

The cardinals struggled in their second game vs. Cal-PA, losing 14-3. There were bright spots in the game as 5 different Cards recorded hits. Rachelle Carello led off the third with a double which set the stage for Shaynna Johnson and Ashley McSweeney’s back-to-back homers scoring the games only runs. Jordan Burkhart and Sunagel added singles in the contest while Ashley Nichols recorded the loss.

The Cardinals continued to struggle in the third game of the tournament losing  9-0 against East Stroudsburg. Carello and Johnson recorded the Cardinals only hits. Heather Hoyt threw five innings, walking two batters and striking out three while recording the loss.

In the 4-3 loss to Gannon, the Cardinals recorded six hits from six different players. Jordan Burkhart hit a two-run homer while Petros and Wamsley both doubled. Petros tacked on an RBI, while Carello, Johnson, and Kurowski all added singles. Wamsley pitched six innings walking three batters and striking out seven during the loss.

The Lady Cards finished the tournament with an 11-4 loss to Kutztown. In the second inning, Sunagel walked, Wamsley followed with a double and Gina Hicks reached on a free pass as well, setting the stage for Carello. Carello cleared the bases with a Grand Slam to top her 2-3 performance on the day. Sunagel and Hicks each added singles.

The Lady Cardinals’ saw some great performances during the Salem Tournament, including four homeruns and a couple multi-hit games. McSweeney and Burkhart each hit round trippers while Johnson finished with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.

Carello had a spectacular tournament going 5-15 with a grand-slam with a double, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Petros had a multi-hit game with a double and a single and also recorded an RBI, a run scored with a walk. Olivia Wamsley went 3-10 with two doubles, two runs scored and a walk, while also pitching fourteen innings, striking out nine batters.
