Wheeling Jesuit Volleyball Selected
WVIAC Team Sportsmanhip Champions

12/8/2008

PRINCETON, W.Va., December 8, 2008---The winners for the inaugural West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's team sportmanship awards have been selected.  The award was proposed by the league's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) last summer and was selected by head coaches and game officials from each team sport.

Charleston (women's soccer), Pitt Johnstown (men's soccer), Seton Hill (football), and Wheeling Jesuit (volleyball) are the first winners.  All four squads paired sportsmanship with success on the field during the fall.  The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball squad posted a 30-10 record, while reaching the NCAA Atlantic Region finals and winning the WVIAC Tournament.  Seton Hill's football team established a school record for victories with a 10-3 mark and reached the second round of the NCAA post-season.  The Charleston women's soccer team and Pitt Johnstown men's soccer squad each finished in the top half of the WVIAC standings and qualified for the six-team conference tournament.

"This award dovetails with the NCAA Division II goal to improve game environment," said WVIAC commissioner Barry Blizzard.  "Our institutional presidents have committed to this effort and we are proud to recognize these winners.  Thanks also to our conference SAAC for taking the lead in launching a program to acknowledge team sportsmanship."

Each program will be awarded with a traveling "WVIAC Sportsmanship Champion" banner to display for one year.  Sportsmanship champions will be recognized throughout the remainder of the academic year in all of the league's team sports.

The 16-team West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was founded in 1924 and is tied for the largest all-sports membership in the NCAA's Division II.  For more information on the NCAA Division II Game Environment initiative, please click here.  The top five finishers for all four fall sports follow:
