MARTIN NAMED ASC FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE YEAR Concludes season with triple wins and National B cuts.
Huntington, WV, Feb. 20, 2010---Wheeling Jesuit University freshman swimmer Emily Martin has concluded her inaugural season with the Cards by earning the swimmer of the year honors for the Appalachian Swimming Conference.
Martin, who hails from Parkersburg, WV, has made her mark on both the WJU and the Appalachian Swimming Conference record board. She captured the fastest time in school history in the 200 Butterfly earlier this season and then proceeded to smash the ASC record in the 500 Freestyle by more than 10 seconds with at time of 5:05.19, the women’s 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:07.41, and the 200 Freestyle placing her 1:54.37 firmly in the record book.
Her swims also were significant enough to receive National B cut honors. Head Coach Rick West credited Martin for helping the WJU women’s team rise to a second place finish in the conference championship.
“At WJU, we really believe in the total team coming together to win championships, “West said. “But when you know you have a swimmer like Emily Martin who is versatile enough to swim (and win) in multiple events, it allows you as a coach to maximize the potential of all the athletes on your roster.”
“We are so proud of Emily’s accomplishments this year,” West said. “She has set the bar high for herself and her team and we look forward to seeing how the rest of her career unfolds as a Cardinal.”
