Wheeling Jesuit Swimming Sweeps St. Vincent
Latrobe, PA---The Men's and Women's Swimming Teams of Wheeling Jesuit University both captured their second wins of the season as the Men defeated St. Vincent College by a score 113-88 and the Women prevailed 144-110.
The women were lead by several double winners on the day. Freshman, Emily Martin set two new pool records with wins in the 100 and 200 Butterflies with times of 1:00.87 and 2:14.58 respectively. Fellow freshman and roommate Casey Hamilton duplicated the task by setting two new pool records in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, touching first with times of 25.34 and 56.05. Freshman Stephanie Blau made it to the wall first in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:19.67, while freshman Shelby Bey took first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:11.35).
The Lady Cardinal Upperclassmen also had a great showing as Sophomore Jessica Steve won the 200 Freestyle (2:07.48) and the 500 Freestyle (5:39.73). Chelsea Guiseppi (Sophomore) swam to a pair of first place finishes also. Guiseppi touched first in the 1000 Freestyle (11:38.03) and 100 Backstroke (1:07.45).
“Our women had another great meet this week. We were able to win 12 of 14 events and race well in every event. It's always exciting to break pool records and to have a win against a quality program like St Vincent makes it even more rewarding.” said Head Coach Rick West of his team's win.
The Lady Cards also set two pool records in the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay with winning times of 1:54.70 and 3:50.62.
The Cardinal Men experienced much of the same success as their female counterparts. The men won 13 of 14 events on their way to a second straight win this season.
The Cardinals were lead by triple individual event winner, Freshman, Patrick Chadowski. Chadowski took first place in the 100 and 200 Butterflies as well as the 200 Individual Medley with times of 54.57, 2:04.01, and 2:04.22. Freshman, Colin Lawler added to the winning totals with first place finishes in the 100 and 200 Backstrokes with times of 57.48 and 2:08.23. Tom Smith (Freshman) held down the sprint events by winning the 50 Freestyle (22.57) and the 100 Freestyle (50.10).
First year transfer student Michael Viscardi won both breaststroke events with times of 1:04.01 (100 Breaststroke) and 2:20.08 (200 Breaststroke). Sophomore Jake Lucas won his first individual event of his college career by taking first in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 11:14.69. Fellow sophomore, Ben Foreman, won the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:18.48.
The men's 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay also took first place finishes on the day. The 200 MR of Lawler, Viscardi, Chadowski, and Smith won with a time of 1:54.70 while the 400 FR of Smith, Bracamontes, Foreman, and Queale set a new pool record of 3:24.63.
The Cardinals will be in action next weekend when they face IUP on October 30th at 5:00pm and the University of Findlay on October 31st. Both contests are on the road.
