WJU Falls to BW in Opener
The Wheeling Jesuit men’s and the women’s squads dropped their home opener to Baldwin Wallace College with a score of 116-89 and 118-79 respectively.
Despite the loss several Cardinals won individual races. The women were led by Senior Captain Ali Hengesbach who won both the 500 (5:45.23) and 1000 (11:42.15) Freestyle events.
Freshman Chelsea Guiseppi was the only other double winner of the day in the 200 IM (2:24.44) and the 100 Backstroke (1:05.92). Fellow Freshman Jessica Steve also touched first in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:09.37.
The men were led by Junior Captain Sergio Bracamontes who raced to first place finishes in the 200 Free (1:53.51) and the 100 Butterfly (56.41).
A pair of freshman men also contributed to Cardinal first place finishes. Freshmen Ben Foreman won the 500 Freestyle and Logan Weaver won the 100 Backstroke with times of 5:15.57 and 1:01.35 respectively.
“BW is a much deeper team than we are at this time and they really showed it tonight,” Head Coach Rick West said. “I am very excited with how our team raced, especially the freshman.”
“Your first meet can be very nerve racking but our kids did not show that. They took every opportunity they could to swim fast.”
