Cardinal Men Defeat St. Vincent, WJU Women Fall

The Jesuit Men won their first dual meet of the season when they topped St Vincent College 138-124.  The Lady Cards fell short with a score of 131-96.

The men opened the meet by winning the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:43.51 (L. Weaver, Rico, Bracamontes, & Foreman).  Captain Sergio Bracamontes earned Bluegrass Mountain Swimmer of the Week honors by winning the 100 (56.17) and 200 Butterfly (2:06.34) events.  Senior Kevin Rico won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.32.  A host of freshman men took first led by Ben Foreman in the 500 (5:08.68) and 200 (1:54.06) Freestyles.  Max Queale and Logan Weaver touched first in the 100 Freestyle (52.04) and 100 Backstroke (1:00.19)respectively.

The race of the meet came during the 200 IM where the men had to place well to win the meet.  Jacob Totherow l(2:15.33) led an all freshman sweep of the event which sealed the Cardinal victory.  Paul Dippold (2:16.38) and Sean Weaver (2:16.96) finished 2nd and 3rd.

The Jesuit women also had their share of wins on the day.  Freshman Chelsea Guiseppi won both the 200 IM (2:25.90) and the 100 Backstroke (1:05.08).  Junior Sarah Kung also added a win in the 200 Backstroke.  The women closed out the meet by out touching St Vincent in the 400 Freestyle Relay.  The team of Hengesbach, Steve, Rizo, and Gandee clocked in with a time of 4:00.69 winning by .06 of a second.

“I have mixed emotions about the meet,” Coach Rick West said. “I am really happy for the men and obviously disappointed in the outcome for our women.”
“The positive on both sides is that both teams raced hard the whole meet.  We had great swims from our veterans but the freshman really showed that they can score points when we need them to.  More than two-thirds of the team are freshman and we need them to gain experience quickly.” West said.
