Women's Basketball Announces 2010 Class
Wheeling, WV, August 13, 2010---Wheeling Jesuit University head women’s basketball coach, Katie Hine has announced the incoming freshmen class for the Lady Cards’ 2010-2011 season.
“It is with great excitement that our staff has brought in not only outstanding athletes, but phenomenal young ladies as well,” Hine stated. “We added five players, and each brings a certain unique element to the floor that will aid in our success this season. Each of the young ladies shine in the classroom as well. The incoming class achieved an average GPA of 3.91, with two of them reaching over a 4.0.”
Alex Anderson is a 6’1 forward from Strongsville, OH and was a team captain for head coach, Bill Cash. She averaged 10 points per game her senior season and grabbed 675 rebounds in her four year career, which stands as a school record at Strongsville High School. In the classroom, Alex attained an overall GPA of 4.1, and was a member of The National Honor’s Society and Mu Alpha Theta, an honor’s program for math students.
“Alex has showcased a special talent around the basket offensively and defensively. She has a very long reach, and we look for her to be effective in the line up right away. Alex is very technically sound in her movements, and understands the game with a high basketball IQ.”
Adrianna Ferraro is a 5’6 point guard from Hampton, PA and was a team captain under head coach, Mary Bukovac. She averaged 14.3 points and 3 assist per game. Adrianna received several awards throughout her playing career, including multiple tournament MVPs, and was chosen as an All-Section Player in the WPIAL. In the classroom, Adrianna maintained an overall GPA of a 4.3, and was a member of the National Honor Society. In addition, she was a Senior Scholar at Hampton, KDKA TV News Effort Award Recipient, and a U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award recipient.
“Adrianna defines what hard work is all about. She desires excellence in everything she is involved with, and it shows. She is a hard-nosed defender, and works tirelessly on her offensive skills as well. She definitely adds depth to our perimeter line up.”
Farryn Jones is a 5’8 guard from Pittsburgh, PA who played under head coach, Shannon Boyle, at Oakland Catholic High School. As an Eagle, Farryn was a team captain her senior year, averaging 9 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals per game. Off the court, Farryn attained an overall GPA of 3.85 and received the President’s Award of Educational Achievement at Oakland Catholic High School.
“Farryn is a strong and athletic perimeter player with versatile abilities on the court. Her offensive strengths shine in a fast pace style of play, as her transition game is key to her success. A very hard nosed defender, Farryn uses her strength to shut down opposing players.”
Taneka Lewis is a 5’6 guard from Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, OH. She was team captain for highly successful head coach, Tracy Miller. She averaged 10 points, and 4 assists per game last year. As a true point guard, Taneka is beginning to mold herself into a scorer. During her senior season, Taneka garnished the following awards: North Coast League First Team, All Ohio Honorable Mention, Women’s Tri County Basketball Coaches Association All Star, Akron Touchdown Club All Star, and the Hoban Leadership Award. Off the court, Taneka was a proud member of the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, and the Academic Achievement Award from the City of Akron while maintaining a 3.713 GPA.
“Taneka is a true student and admirer of the game of basketball. She holds a strong passion for what she brings the court, and is constantly working to be better. A very skillful guard with the ball, Taneka also showcases her hard work on the defensive end.”
Stephanie Moore is a 5’10 guard/forward from Morgantown, WV and was team captain under head coach, Cecil Allen Collins. Although undersized under the basket, Stephanie can step out beyond the typical forward’s role on the court. She maintains a very consistent jump shot, and can be a 3-point threat from beyond the arc. Stephanie is also a great student of the game, and in the classroom as she was an Honor Roll Student at Morgantown HS with an overall GPA of 3.7.
“Stephanie will fit in well with our team and system of play. Her ability to defend in the post, and step outside of the paint offensively will certainly add depth to the forward position.” |
