Lady Cards Fall to Pioneers

Glenville, WV, Jan. 11, 2010--- The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team (5-5, 4-1) dropped their first conference game to Glenville State College (7-3, 5-1) 91-87 on Monday evening.

The Cardinals were led in scoring by sophomore Cassy Sanderson with 18 points. Senior Kim Mueller and junior Megan Stuvek both turned in double-double performances in the loss. Mueller had a team high 15 rebounds along with 11 points while Stuvek recorded 16 points and added 11 rebounds. Sophomore Kourtney Booth was third in scoring with 15 points and freshman Chrissy Pavlik chipped in 13 points.

The first half was back-and-forth during the first five minutes of play. The Pioneers used a 12-2 run for a ten point advantage. The Lady Cards quickly cut into that lead with three minutes remaining on back-to-back buckets from freshman Mallory Brooks and Megan Stuvek.

Next, Sanderson connected with a long range 3-ball cutting the Pioneer lead to one with a minute left. The two teams would trade buckets to close out the first half with the Pioneers leading 44-43.

The Pioneers would open the second half with another 12-2 run, establishing a ten point lead.  They controlled the tempo and pushed the lead to as many as 16 points. With four minutes remaining, the Cardinals would score 11 unanswered points as Booth connected with consecutive layups and Stuvek chipped in two points. Pavlik drained a 3-pointer along with a 2-point bucket, cutting the lead to five with 2:41 remaining.

The comeback ended with consecutive 3-pointers from Glenville State after a Cardinal missed shot and turnover.

The Lady Cards will be back in action on Thursday, January 14th as they host WVIAC rival West Virginia State University at 5:30 p.m.
