Lakers Edge Lady Cardinals
Erie, PA, Dec. 9, 2009---Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team moves to 4-2 after dropping a close game on the road to the Lakers of Mercyhurst College 66-70. The Lady Cardinals had a one point (32-31) advantage going into the break, but it wasn't enough to hold off a second half Laker charge. Sophomore Kourtney Booth led the first half scoring with 12 of her 19 points. She was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe and knocked down two from deep.
As a team, they shot 36 percent from the field on a 12 of 33 showing. Junior Megan Stuvek grabbed five of the teams' 12 first half rebounds and added six of her ten points while senior Kim Mueller and red-shirt fresman Chrissy Pavlik each added five points. Mercyhurst opened the second half with a 3-pointer to take a two point lead which proved to be enough as the Cards managed to even the score twice, but could not take control of the game during the second frame.
Sophomore Cassy Sanderson poured in 12 of the teams' 34 second half points. She went five of nine from the field including a two for three showing from long range. Mueller and Stuvek each had four points during the final period while Pavlik and freshman Lauren Myers finished with eight and seven, respectivley. The Lady Cards will continue play in Daytona Beach, Florida at the Daytona Invitational on Monday, December 28th and Tuesday, December 29th. They will open with Clarion University on Monday and finish with Lee University on Tuesday.
