Lady Cardinals Take Down Fighting Scots
Wheeling, WV, Feb. 1, 2010---The coaches of Wheeling Jesuit University (8-9, 7-5) and Ohio Valley University laced up their sneakers as the squared off at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Monday night.
The two squads teamed up with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches for the annual Coaches vs. Cancer event. Wheeling Jesuit employees also participated in the event by wearing their sneakers to work on Monday. The event raised a little over $450.00 for the fight against cancer.
WJU never trailed in the game, taking down the Fighting Scots 73-56.
The Lady Cardinals opened the game with an 11-0 run. Kourtney Booth led the charge, knocking down two shots from deep while freshman Chrissy Pavlik capped off the Cardinal run with a 3-ball of her own.
The Lady Cards continued to make small runs, establishing a 33-11 lead with eight minutes to go in the first period. Ohio Valley surged for 15 points while the Lady Cards added six to their total.
Booth led scoring with 12 of her 17 points and was flawless from beyond the arc, connecting on four in the first frame and a perfect 5-of-5 for the game. Cassy Sanderson, Kara DeSantis and Chrissy Pavlik all chipped in five points for a 39-26 lead when the buzzer ended the half.
The Lady Cards continued to out score their opponent by shooting 45 percent from the floor. They made 26 of their 58 attempts from the field including an 11-of-22 performanc from the three point stripe.
Ohio Valley held a slight edge (34-27) on the glass, out rebounding the Lady Cards by seven. Lauren Myers pulled down five boards and finished with seven points for the Cards while Kim Mueller grabbed four missed shots.
Pavlik tallied 13 points on a pair of three-pointers, a pair of two-pointers, and a 3-for-3 showing from the charity stripe. DeSantis also reached double-digits adding 11, throwing in 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line.
The Lady Cardinals will battle Davis and Elkins at home on Thursday, February 4 in a 5:30 pm start.
