The Lady Cards Dominate with Defense
Vienna, WV, Feb. 20, 2010---In a game which showcased 13 lead changes and six ties, the Wheeling Jesuit women’s basketball team prevail over the Lady Scots of Ohio Valley University on Saturday afternoon, 68-60.
The Lady Cards were down 36-33 at the break while shooting 36 percent from the floor compared to the 58 percent showing by OVU. The Lady Scots held a slight edge on the glass out rebounding Jesuit by two, 16-14.
The Lady Cardinals’ defense proved to be dominant, as they forced 14 turnovers and swiped eight passes in the first half. Kim Mueller and Lauren Myers each intercepted three passes while Chrissy Pavlik and Megan Stuvek stole one apiece.
During the second half, the Lady Cards shot 50 percent from the floor with Kourtney Booth leading the way with 12 of her 15 points. She was 2-for-5 from downtown and 5-for-9 from the floor. Pavlik chipped in nine to go along with her seven first half points and led the Lady Cards in scoring with 16. DeSantis and Myers finished with a dozen points each. The ladies continued to apply defensive pressure, causing 13 additional turnovers and racking up 11 more steals. Stuvek and DeSantis combined for six steals, three apiece, and finished with 4 and 3, respectively. Mueller caused havoc in the paint, as she led the team in steals with five and pulled down 10 rebounds.
WJU went on a 16-5 run in the first five minutes after the break, taking an eight point advantage. Ohio Valley would battle back and take a 51-50 lead with 10:46 to play. The rest of the game was back-and-forth with each team exchanging the lead.
At the two minute mark, the Lady Cards scored on two consecutive possessions while Booth added a 3-point dagger on the third. Pavlik secured the game and completed the 8-0 run with two free throws.
The women’s basketball team will play host to Salem International University on Monday, February 22nd. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
