Women Fall to 4-4 in WVIAC
West Liberty, WV, Jan. 18, 2010---Wheeling Jesuit women’s basketball (5-8, 4-4) fell to 4-4 in the WVIAC, against arch-rival West Liberty (8-5, 4-4) on Monday night 87-71.
Freshman Kara DeSantis paced the Cardinals with 14 points while junior Megan Stuvek chipped in 13 points. Freshmen Chrissy Pavlik and Lauren Myers both added ten points.
The Lady Cardinals and the Lady Hilltoppers were trading buckets for the first three minutes of the game. At the 17 minute mark the Cards trailed 9-7 and the Toppers would push the lead to ten in the next three minutes. Five minutes later, a DeSantis layup capped off a 14 point run to cut the West Liberty lead to two with 8:58 remaining. A second scoring burst by West Liberty ended the half 48-38.
To open the second half, sophomore Cassy Sanderson hit two consecutive jumpers and pulled down an offensive and defensive rebound to cut the deficit to six. After a Topper 3-pointer, the two teams traded buckets and the Cardinals could not get the game below nine.
The Lady Cardinals will play host to Fairmont University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 21st.
