Tim Florence Returns as Head Women's Lacrosse Coach

"My goal is to build a team of true student-athletes, women who are focused both academically and athletically."

WHEELING, WV, Aug. 24, 2011 -- Wheeling Jesuit University Director of Athletics Danny Sancomb is proud to announce Tim Florence as the Lady Cardinals new head women's lacrosse coach.

"I'm excited to have Tim lead our women's lacrosse team, and having worked here in the past, Tim understands our mission and identity," said Sancomb. "He will develop our young women on and off the field, and in time, will have them competing at a championship level."

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Florence played lacrosse at Upper Arlington High School. He earned a bachelor of science in physical education from Ohio State University and a master's degree in business administration at Wheeling Jesuit University.

From 1999-2002, Florence was an assistant coach for Wheeling Jesuit's inaugural men's lacrosse team, creating a strong foundation with head coach Bear Davis. During the infant years, the Cardinal lacrosse team improved every year until Florence’s departure. With two years and five wins under their belt, the Cardinals doubled their victories in 2003, finishing with 10 wins, 5 losses and briefly held a top 10 ranking in NCAA Division II.

From Wheeling, Florence accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Denver (2002-2003) where the Pioneers achieved their first Great Western Conference Championship. The following season, he returned to Wheeling Jesuit as head men's lacrosse coach, finishing with a 7-7 overall record.

Florence spent the next seven years teaching the game of lacrosse to high school and youth players in the San Antonio, Texas area, accepting positions as a middle school dean, registrar and head lacrosse coach at Saint Mary's Hall High School.

After four years, Florence went to Saint Vincent's School in Bedford, Texas as assistant head of school and director of admissions. He spent last year coaching at the Episcopal School of Dallas.

"I'm glad to be back, and would like to thank President Beyer and Danny Sancomb for the opportunity to start women's lacrosse at Wheeling Jesuit," Florence stated. "I was fortunate to have been an assistant when WJU started the men's lacrosse program, and I am looking forward to starting the women's program."

"My goal is to build a team of true student-athletes, women who are focused both academically and athletically."
