Wheeling Jesuit Falls 2-1 to Wesleyan

Buckhannon, WV, Nov. 6, 2009---West Virginia Wesleyan (12-6-1) posted a 2-1 semifinal victory over the Wheeling Jesuit (11-10) in sub-freezing temperatures Friday night at Wood Street Field.

Wesleyan started the scoring early just two minutes into the game. Meghan Zayas received the ball on the left wing and after beating two defenders crossed the ball to several players waiting in the box. Hannah Macormic made a strong run from the midfield and headed the ball past Jesuit goalkeeper Jessica Park.

Despite the early deficit, Jesuit fought back and almost found the equalizer in the eighth minute when a shot from Kara Houston took a couple of deflections, but junior Madison Edwards was able to cover up the ball before it crossed the goal line.

Opportunities went back and forth for the next ten minutes. Near the 20-minute mark Emma Levin-Nielson played a ball forward to Jill Morrison who found Macormic making a run behind the defense. Jesuit keeper Park charged and collided with Macormic forcing the shot wide left. The ensuing goal kick led to the equalizing goal.

Aleisha Rees attempted the clear the ball from the Lady Bobcats defensive third, but Kara Houston was able to block the clearance and make a run to goal. Edwards stepped out to cut down the shot, but Houston was able to slot the shot under Edward’s outstretched arms to tie the game 1-1.

Wesleyan took the lead back with only a minute remaining in the first half. Hannah Macormic found Sarah Snyder at the top of the penalty box; she was able to turn and place the ball in the bottom corner of the goal with her left foot to give the Lady Bobcats the lead, 2-1.

The Lady Bobcats controlled the second half of play, out-shooting the Cardinals 10-1. Jesuit’s best opportunity came with 11 minutes remaining in the game when Ashley McGinnis broke down the sideline and crossed the ball into the box, but Edwards was able to collect the cross out of the air.

Wesleyan owned a 10-5 margin in shots-on-goal and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
