Houston Lifts Cards Past Shippensburg with Overtime Game Winner Wheeling, WV, Aug. 30, 2009 --- Following Friday evening’s home opening rainout versus California University of PA, the Lady Cardinal Soccer program opened the season at home on Sunday, August 30th against the Raiders of Shippensburg University. The scoring started in the 10th minute when Junior Kara Houston sent a cross field pass to Senior Jamie Albert for the season’s first goal. Fifteen minutes later, Sophomore Megan Newrones assisted Houston with her first goal of the season and a 2-0 lead over the Raiders. Shippensburg responded with three consecutive goals and had a 3-2 advantage at halftime. In the second half, Senior Jessica Park scored twice in two minutes. First, she tied the game on a penalty kick when she was tripped from behind in the box, next was a 40 yard chip shot in the 63rd minute for a 5-4 lead. Shippensburg retaliated with their first goal of the half, scoring with six minutes to go in regulation forcing the game to overtime. In the 5th minute of the first overtime period, Freshman Ashley McGinnis sent a perfect pass to the middle of the field for Kara Houston setting up a one on one situation with Ship’s goalie. Houston netted the game winner, her second goal of the game. The women’s soccer team will open conference play at home against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday, September 5th at 7:00 PM.
