Team History

Women's Golf

Wheeling Jesuit University had a men’s golf team in the late 50’s but a women’s team was non-existent until 2005.  During the spring of that year, Sue Vail was asked to try to create a team for the fall semester.  At that time she recruited Marisa Wiethe, who graduated from Wheeling Central and Sara Hicks, who graduated from John Marshall.  The women’s team played as a club team at first since five players were needed on the roster.  Marisa and Sara competed very well and shot many low scores, and all were waiting for more recruits for the next season.  Because we did not yet have an identity within the NCAA-DII recruiting was difficult but two walk-ons surfaced.  At the conference championship that year, WJU won by twenty or more strokes.  After recruiting Steffany Krieg from upper Ohio the next year, the conference championship was also obtained by the ladies.  Jackie Eib came on board during the 2007-2008 season and our team average struck a four-year low but the conference championship was not obtainable.  During the first four years of existence the ladies won two WVIAC championships and will continue striving for first place in the conference because we continue to build a winning team.
