2010 Women’s Season Outlook
The 2010 Track and Field season will kick off for the Lady Cardinals on December 5th at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. The Cardinals enter the season with a young team and very talented team who will look to gain some valuable experience and build for the future. In 2009 the Lady Card’s finished 4th at the WVIAC Championships and this year’s squad will look to improve upon that finish with the hopes of challenging for a WVIAC Championship. However it will be a tough road ahead as the Lady Card’s roster is made up of primarily Sophomore and Freshmen athletes. However, the upperclassman that the Lady Cardinals have on their roster will have a very big impact on the scoreboard.
The 2010 squad will be lead by a pair of NCAA National qualifiers in the throws and a NCAA National qualifier in the Mid-Distance events. Juniors Megan Pratt (Parkersburg, WV) and Emily Taylor (Bellaire, OH) will lead the charge in the throwing events. Pratt, who is coming off a red-shirt season, holds the school record in the hammer throw and won the event in 2008. She was also second in the discus and shot put that season. Taylor was the WVIAC Champion last season in the Shot Put, Discus, and Hammer Throw. Both athletes will look to finish first and second in all three events again this season. Sarah Campanelli (Gahanna, OH) is the other upperclassman who should score big points for the Lady Cards. Campanelli, was last seasons WVIAC Runner of the Year despite red-shirting the entire outdoor season. Campanelli earned the honor via her point totals during the indoor season. The 2009 indoor season for Campanelli was one of the greatest single seasons in Cardinal history. She was ranked third nationally in the 800 meters and 6th in the mile. She also set school records in 3 events that season.
In the field events the Lady Cardinals will have several other opportunities to score points with returning standout Amanda Wheeler (Belmont, OH). Wheeler scored at the 2009 WVIAC meet in the Javelin and shot put. Also expected to score for the Lady Cards will be Junior Kate McCormick (Cleveland, OH), who was runner up in the Triple Jump, third in the 100 hurdles, and third in the Heptathlon at the 2009 conference meet. The Cardinals will count on Freshman Megan Campbell (East Liverpool, OH) to pick up points in the High Jump, Long Jump, and the Heptathlon.
The Lady Cardinal mid-distance and distance runners will be lead by 2009 WVIAC 1500 meter runner-up Julia McGinley (Wheeling, WV). Also looking to score for the Cardinals will be a slew of freshman including, Megan Truelove (Scot Depot, WV), Jennifer McFarland (St. Mary’s, WV), Lindsey Mills (Fairmont, WV) and Katie Balbier (Cleveland, OH).
The sprints and hurdle crew will also be lead by a strong contingent of freshman athletes. Olivia Lent (Zanesville, OH) should look to challenge for the WVIAC 400 meter crown and be a strong presence on the Lady Card’s relays. Ashley White (Buckhannon, WV) will also look to challenge for the 100 meter and 200 meter tittles. Cassie Urbauer (Cambridge, OH) and Kristen Saggio (Weirton, WV) will add much needed depth to the Sprints core and help out tremendously on the relay events. Twin sisters Samantha and Jeanne Jendras (Romney, WV) will bolster the Lady Cardinal hurdlers and provide points in the Heptathlon event.
